How do you find “top-level” headings?

The first heading outline level always counts, in any editing language. We also match many localized built-in “level 1” style IDs (e.g. English Heading 1, Spanish/Italian/Portuguese Titulo/Titolo 1, French Titre 1, German Überschrift 1, Nordic and Central European names, plus common Russian, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean style titles). If you use custom style names that do not match those patterns, set the first heading outline level on those paragraphs. Headings inside tables are skipped.

Why does the table of contents look empty at first?

The download contains a live TOC field. After you open it, refresh or update the table of contents so entries and page numbers populate from your headings.

Will this change my custom headers or footers?

If a section already has a default footer, we keep using it when we add page numbers. We only add a new footer part when the document had no default footer reference yet.

Is every document feature preserved?

We only adjust layout fields your options ask for. Unusual templates, macros, or very custom XML might need a quick check in your editor after download.
